This worksheet was designed by Andrea Ascuena at the College of Western Idaho. It was originally used for a summary/response essay where students had to summarize a difficult article then craft a response (agree, disagree, agree overall while disagreeing with one or more main points, disagree overall while agreeing with some main points, or agreeing with part of the thesis while disagreeing with another part. While effective for this kind of assignment, it would also be a good way to help students break down an essay's thesis and main points and brainstorm ways to respond. This helps both with summary and with encouraging students to talk back to a text and imagine a variety of responses.
This is an assignment Joy Palmer at College of Western Idaho adapted from Teaching English in the Two Year College 37.4. (See some more details at the bottom of the handout.) She used it successfully in English 090 but imagines it would be good for Plus or regular 101 students. In its current form, students were required to do this for every reading in the class, but it could be adapted in a number of ways—used for specific readings, done in groups in class, pared down and connected with other reading strategies.
